Nail Disorders
Most Nail disorders are due to damage that has occurred to the actively growing Matrix, which contains nerves, lymph, and blood vessels. The matrix is responsible for the reproduction and hardening of the nail. Following are a few Disorders that are seen.
Corrugation/Wavy Ridges The nail is wavy or has uneven growth. The best way to maintain these types of nails are to buff the rough edges slightly to minimise the edges.
Furrows When the nail cell receives an injury a depression can be caused. When a person has this condition one should be very careful and protect it from further damage.
Leuconychia As the name suggests it means white spots. These spots may be due to minor damage caused and will be rectified as the nail grows out.
Onychauxis This condition is seen when a person has an infection, here the nail becomes thicker and coarser.
Onychatrophia This condition can be detected when the growth of the nail is very slow and the free edge of the nail is not visable even the lustre on the nail is missing. This takes place due to a major injury or a disease.
Pterygium This condition is seen when the cuticle grows so much that one cannot see the lunula.
Onychophagy A nervous habit of biting ones nails is known as Onychophagy.
Onychorrhexis When nails tend to split easily due to brittleness of the nail or over usage of nail polish removers.
Hangnail When the cuticle that is surrounding the nails is no longer in direct contact with the nails due to excessive cutting of the cuticle. It is advisable to take care of this condition as soon as possible as it can get infected.
Eggshell Nails This condition occurs after a major illness, it is when the nail looses its firmness and bends over the nailbed, it is also very thin and white.
Blue Nail A heart disorder or poor Blood Circulation is the main cause for this condition.
A Bruised Nail When there is bleeding in the nail bed due to injury this condition occurs. The nail will show dark, purplish in colour.
