Nail Info
Onyx (The Nail) is composed mainly of Keratin, a protein substance that forms the base of all horny tissue. The condition of the nail reflects the general health of the person although it does not contains any nerves or blood vessels. A normal healthy nail is firm and flexible and its pink nail bed can be seen through the translucent nail. It is an appendage of the skin that is used to protect the fingers & toes. The average growth rate of the nail is a little above 0.3cm per month, growth is faster during summer than winters.
The nail is made up of three sections the Body, Root and Free Edge. The Nail Body extends from the Nail Root to the portion of the nail plate that reaches over the fingertip. The Nail Root is at the base of the nail and is embedded underneath the skin. It originates from an actively growing Matrix, which contains nerves, lymph, and blood vessels. The matrix is responsible for the reproduction and hardening of the nail. Any injury or health issues can affect the functioning of this part. Below the matrix is the light coloured 'lunula', it is here where the connective tissues as well as the nail join in order to give a firmness. The part of the Nail Body that has extended over the nail bed is known as Free Edge.
