The Structure Of Hair

Everyday we come across many a new face and our eyes first fall on features such as eyes, hair, nose, etc. We admire these features on others sometimes dumbfounded else aghast. Hair which probably stands out the most, its texture, colour is often used to decipher whether the person is of high social standing or would need some sort of support.

Hair is found all over the human body, the stage of growth or the variation in thickness varies person to person.

Although hair is composed of only a dead protein called Keratin. It is evolved by the papilla, which is below your skin in a sack-like structure called a hair follicle. A countless number of these sacks are nourished by tiny blood vessels and glands.

The structure of the hair is arranged in 3 layers, the Cuticle, the Cortex, and the Medulla. The Cuticle is the outer part of the hair that contains several layers of overlapping scales. The Cortex consists of numerous strands. It is this part of the hair where Melanin is found and it is changed during the chemical processing of hair. The innermost part is the Medulla it is hollow.

Today a layman differentiates a man on the road as a foreigner or a person from his own race by looking at the colour of hair. Golden/Yellow/Red hair is found on people usually having Western Characteristics. Asians / Caucasians / Africans have Black/Brown hair. If the hair is coloured it is due to the presence of pigments - either melanin (black - brown) or pheomelanin (red - yellow). If these are lacking the hair is white. Canite is the term given to grey hair. It is an illusion created by the mixture of white and coloured hairs. Individual 'grey' hairs do not exist.
